About the Role:

The Principal Concept Artist will be responsible for leading the concept art effort for a AAA game. Joining us in the early stages of production, they will have the opportunity to help us define the game's visual identity.

They will work closely with the project's Art Director, as well as our other artists (level artists, 3D artists, etc.), to develop the game's world and characters visuals. Their expertise in art will be necessary to influence the game's art direction, and deliver best in class concept arts.

The ideal candidate will understand that great games are made by great teams, and they will be expected to lead and grow our concept art team and foster a collaborative work environment.

Location: Toronto, ON or Montreal, QC

Responsibilities:

• Collaborate with the Art Director to define the game's visual identity and establishing a coherent visual style for environments, characters, props and special effects.
• Create concept arts for the game's world, its characters and props.
• Review concept artists work and, in collaboration with the Art Director, define our quality expectations and keep a consistent style and vision.
• Ensure quality expectations are met throughout the different production phases.
• Work closely with level artists, level designers and 3D artists to deliver stunning in-game visuals.
• Lead a concept art team, building and mentoring them through the projects.
• Assist producers in planning the concept art work, in the short and long terms.

Qualifications:

• 10 years of experience working in video game art, specifically for AAA games.
• Excellent drawing skills and mastery of core artistic skills such as composition, color theory, perspective and lighting.
• Have a vivid and varied imagination
• Experience in leading art teams, building trust and driving results.
• Excellent understanding of artistic principles such as movement, balance and proportion.
• Great knowledge and experience developing architecture and characters.
• Mastery of Photoshop to a superior level.
• Be up to date with the current concept art best practices, and implement them within the team.
• 3D art skills and ability to create assets using Blender, Maya, Substance or Zbrush is a plus.
• Understanding of video game production phases is a plus.
• Experience working with art outsourcers is a plus.
